Maleny, Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Hidden amongst the rolling green hills of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Goodwater Ridge feels like a little piece of Europe tucked away in Maleny.

With its stone ruins, intimate chapel, established gardens and beautiful architectural details, it was the perfect setting for this European-inspired wedding editorial — romantic, layered and a little unexpected.

Created as a styled shoot alongside an incredible team of Sunshine Coast wedding vendors, the vision was to show what a wedding at Goodwater Ridge could look like when European influence meets modern editorial styling.

A European-Inspired Wedding at Goodwater Ridge

The inspiration behind the shoot was a destination wedding somewhere in the European countryside — without actually leaving the Sunshine Coast.

Rather than trying to recreate one particular place, we drew on the feeling of long summer celebrations in Italy and the Mediterranean: warm stone, sculptural florals, beautiful textures and tables designed to encourage everyone to settle in and stay awhile.

Green and lilac formed the foundation of the colour palette, layered with soft pinks, white florals and silver details throughout. Patterned linens, coloured glassware and unexpected details kept the styling from feeling too traditional, while still working beautifully with the warm, textural spaces at Goodwater Ridge.

The overall look was romantic and elevated, but still playful enough to feel interesting.

It suited Goodwater Ridge perfectly.

An Editorial Ceremony Among The Ruins

One of the most beautiful parts of Goodwater Ridge is the variety of spaces available across the property.

For the first ceremony setting, we worked with The Ruins, using sheer veiling and florals to soften the existing stonework while still allowing the architecture to be the hero.

There’s already so much texture and character here that it doesn’t take much to completely transform the space.

A second ceremony concept introduced deeper tones, layered fabrics and a dark green velvet backdrop, creating something moodier and more editorial.

For couples planning a Goodwater Ridge wedding, having spaces like these gives you so much freedom to create a ceremony that feels completely different to anything you’ve seen before.

A Layered Reception Inside the Chapel

Inside the chapel, the European influence continued with a layered reception tablescape filled with pattern, texture and sculptural florals.

The green botanical linen became a feature in itself, paired with dark green glassware, soft pink and lilac florals, taper candles and illustrated napkins. Rather than keeping everything perfectly minimal, the styling embraced a little maximalism — and I think that’s what makes this setup so good.

The long table ran through the centre of the chapel beneath sweeping sheer fabric and oversized chandeliers, with florals spilling from the table all the way to the floor.

Up close, there were so many smaller details to discover: purple orchids on individual place settings, lilac napkins, layered crockery, silver cutlery and green glassware amongst the flowers.

It feels abundant without becoming overly formal — exactly the kind of reception styling that makes guests want to pull up a chair, pour a glass of wine and stay all night.

And, naturally, there was a tiramisu tower.

Because if we’re pretending we’re somewhere in the Italian countryside, tiramisu feels fairly essential.

Instead of a traditional wedding cake, individual tiramisus were stacked in coupe glasses and finished tableside with cocoa — equal parts dessert and theatre.

This whole sequence is GREAT for the blog, by the way. It makes the shoot feel like an actual celebration rather than purely a styling showcase.

Golden Hour Portraits, A Vintage Mustang & Florals in the Fountain

As the afternoon softened into golden hour, we moved outside for portraits throughout the grounds.

This is where Goodwater Ridge really shines from a photography perspective.

There are so many completely different backdrops within a short walk — stone architecture, open hinterland scenery, gardens, the fountain and beautiful pockets of light — which means you can create plenty of variety without disappearing from your wedding for hours.

For this shoot, we styled the fountain with overflowing florals before bringing in a vintage Mustang for another subtle nod to that effortless European feeling.

The combination of the car, flowers and late-afternoon Maleny light was easily one of my favourite parts of the shoot.

We finished the evening back inside the chapel with projected artwork, softer light and a private first dance.

I also brought along my 35mm film camera for this shoot, because honestly, how could I not? The softer colours, grain and slightly imperfect feel of film worked so beautifully with the European-inspired styling and gave some of my favourite images from the day a completely different feel.

Why Goodwater Ridge Is Such a Beautiful Maleny Wedding Venue

As a Sunshine Coast wedding photographer, I’m constantly spoiled with incredible hinterland venues, but Goodwater Ridge offers something genuinely different.

It has that sense of escape couples often love about destination weddings, while still being right here in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

From a photography perspective, I especially love the variety. You have beautiful stone architecture and The Ruins, an intimate chapel for receptions and indoor celebrations, hinterland scenery and gardens, multiple ceremony possibilities, and plenty of portrait locations without needing to leave the property.

There’s also enough character already built into the venue that you can either keep your styling beautifully simple or completely transform the spaces and create something bold.

For couples drawn to European-inspired weddings, editorial styling and celebrations that feel a little less traditional, there’s so much potential here.
